既是活力菜又是颱風菜。
所謂颱風菜：要耐強風、耐雨、耐熱、耐旱、耐脊、不用老梗、不用有葉子，插在土裏或水裏，大約一週就會冒出新芽。倒下去還能生長、少有蟲害、不需噴施化學藥劑，生長繁殖力強、又有營養、又沒有不悅口感、適應性很廣，臺灣從南到北都可以輕易種植成功的蔬菜。
又名：貴妃菜，在南部人稱活力菜，北部人稱日本黑子仔菜。在外國稱為Chinese Violet(中國紫蘿蘭草)。之所以稱赤道櫻草是因原產於原產於中南半島東南亞、馬來半島、泰國、印度等靠近赤道地區，之所以稱為櫻草，是多年生半匍匐性灌木狀草本植物，在秋冬交際時節會開漂亮的紫色櫻草花型，美名櫻草。之所以稱為活力菜是週年可連續採收，採收一週後就可以再採收，比美明日葉，產量隨溫度上升而增加，一副充滿活力的樣子，再加上採收後雖見葉子萎凋，但泡水後又是翠綠如鮮。
赤道櫻草的營養成份也很高，蛋白質、類胡蘿蔔素、維生素E都很高、特別是高鐵、高鈣。抗氧化活性強，能消除自由基。葉很嫩，生吃味道如仙草味，喉感也有仙草的甘甜味。煮熟後也有一樣的感覺。
從營養學的觀點來看，不但含有多糖體、氨基酸等成份，可以增強抵抗力，還可以達到抗氧化的作用，當中富含的天麻素和天麻甘，除了可增強記憶，亦具有降壓及安定心神的作用，是個健康養顏的野菜。
